Kalyan Banerjee accuses CM Suvendu of 'vindictive politics' amid CID's search at TMC central office
The ongoing administrative and police crackdown against systemic corruption in West Bengal has intensified with the arrest of another sitting Trinamool Congress (TMC) councilor from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC). Acting on specific criminal complaints, a police team from the Watganj police station arrested Sushmita Bhattacharya, the Trinamool councilor representing Ward Number 63. In a swift coordinated operation, the police also arrested her husband on similar charges of illegal collections.
This latest action comes as a direct consequence of the new administrative policies enforced after the BJP government took charge of West Bengal. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari had explicitly issued a stern, zero-tolerance warning against syndicate cultures and financial coercion, stating that extortion rackets would no longer be permitted to operate under state patronage. The state police department has since been given a free hand to act decisively against public representatives facing legitimate graft charges.
Bhattacharya's arrest adds to a rapidly expanding list of opposition political functionaries who have landed behind bars over the past few weeks. The extensive anti-extortion drive has not spared any tier of leadership, resulting in the arrests of multiple municipal councilors, panchayat members, block presidents, and former ruling party MLAs or cabinet ministers. Law enforcement agencies have indicated that investigations into multiple extortion networks are underway across Kolkata and neighboring districts, with more arrests likely to follow.
